Some History

Germania Soccer Club
The Germania Soccer Club is over 55 years old and going strong. Here is a brief history of our club and our Championship teams.

1958: The Start
Karl Schnell, Walter Unterborg, Heribert Puberl, and Fritz Naidle founded the Germania Blue and White Soccer Club in 1958, with enough members to form two teams with substitutes. They joined the Central New York Soccer League, which included teams from within an eighty-mile radius of the Albany Capital District. This often meant long travel distances for the team and their followers. While playing in the Central New York League, the Germania Blue and White earned second place twice, in 1960 and 1967.

1967: Germania’s Soccer field dedicated
In 1965 Germania of Poughkeepsie had purchased several acres on DeGarmo Road in the town of Poughkeepsie for their recreation purposes. Of course, the first thing to be finished was the soccer field! The Blue & White Team dedicated its own soccer field at the Germania Recreation Grounds in 1967. This happened at the same time the Blue and White Soccer team was accepted into the German-American Soccer League.
*Field Note: Improvements to the soccer field and grounds are always a club priority. A state of the art sprinkler system was installed in 2012. Through the soccer club member’s hard work and dedication, Germania now hosts the best privately owned grass field in the Hudson Valley.

1974: The Cosmopolitan Soccer League
In 1974 the German-American Soccer League became the Cosmopolitan Soccer League of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The league consisted of thirty-four clubs divided into three divisions. The League required each member club to field a Reserve Team and it was with those players that the Germania Blue & White Club first found success, winning the Third Division Championship in 1974. In 1976 the club again became Third Division champions and moved up to the Second Division. Two years later they were in the First Division!

1980 – 2000: Germania teams attract the best players
Germania has always attracted the best players from the region. Initially players mostly from Germany made up the teams. Throughout the years players with many different heritages have come to Germania to play. Over the years, Germania has provided a home for talented amateurs and former high school and collegiate players to keep playing.
From the 1980’s to the present time All County, All State, and All American players, and a NCAA National Player of the Year has joined Germania to make our teams the best in the area.

2000 – Present: Germania continues with soccer excellence
The Over 40 team has been a perennial champion in the Eastern District Soccer League winning the league trophy no less than seven times. The Over 40 team has also advanced to the Rocco Amoroso State Cup championship game four out of the last five years.
The Over 30 team also has been champions in their division year after year and won the Marth State Cup Championship in 2011 and 2012.
The Open team, made up of players between 18 and 29 years old, was established in 2010 and attracts many players from area college programs and players returning to the area after college.

The Germania teams practice during the week. All players from the area are invited to join a practice, join Germania, and get on a team’s roster. Contact Joe Ulrich, the soccer club president, or any Germania member to get more information about the soccer club practice times and league schedules.
